Storms can be a real threat to your home. Your roof is the first line of defense against the elements and protects everything you hold dear under it, and you want to make sure it’s in good condition so it can withstand what Mother Nature throws its way. After a storm, there is obvious damage anyone can see but sometimes there is damage inflicted to your roof, by a storm, that an untrained eye cannot see and would require a trained professional to climb the roof and physically inspect it to actually know the condition of your roof after a storm blows through.
Why trust a professional?
A professional is trained to know exactly what to look for after a storm that threatens the integrity of your roof. At no drip roofing, we offer free inspections for our customers and will instruct the homeowner on the next step to take if damage was found.
Why worry about roof damage that is unseen?
Hail and wind damage will decrease the life expectancy of your roof and will make it more vulnerable to the next round of storms. If not addressed it can possibly leave you with a big mess later down the road.
What is wind damage?
Wind damage is when your shingles are lifted up high enough to leave creasing in your shingles or completely blown off the roof. When the shingles are lifted during a storm, water and debris are getting underneath the shingles. This is a problem for two reasons: 1) water can penetrate through nail holes and, 2) the debris that gets under the shingle causes the adhesive strip to lose the ability to re-seal the shingle tab if the shingle was even lucky enough to remain intact by the storm. Think of a piece of tape… If you were to drop it sticky side down in the dirt and pick it back up it would lose its ability to stick to anything. The same concept applies to the adhesive strip on a shingle tab. When shingles are missing or not secure, your roof system is now compromised, allowing water intrusion. Sometimes it’s immediate but a lot of times it’s a slow leak that goes unnoticed. Undetected leaks equal rotten decking and a more expensive repair that could have been avoided if your roof was immediately inspected after a storm. And let’s be honest… It’s just plain ugly to have missing shingles on our roof.
What is hail damage?
Hail damage is where hailstones of various sizes strike a roof during a storm and fracture the fiberglass matting, which is the shingles reinforcement. Think of fiberglass matting as a skeletal system in humans- it gives us structure and something for the tissue in our body to connect to. The fiberglass matting works in the same manner, it is what gives these shingles their strength and something for the asphalt to adhere to. When a hailstone hits the roof, it fractures the matting and knocks off the granules that cover the asphalt. Asphalt is not UV stable and will deteriorate over time. The granules protect the asphalt from the sun, just like sunscreen does for our skin. When the fiberglass matting is fractured and granules missing, the water shedding Capabilities of your roof have been compromised as well as drastically reducing the life expectancy of your roof.
Bottom line…
Most roofing companies do not charge for a full inspection, so why neglect your roof? It literally costs you nothing but could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars just by being proactive in caring for your roof. We take for granted the protection it provides until there is a leak that causes damage to something valuable inside our home. So, find a roofing company you trust and take care of the only thing that can protect you from a storm– your roof.
